Autumn Campaign Shoot at Hotel Lilien
Our search for the perfect backdrop for our Autumn 23 Collection led us to the quaint and picturesque town of Tannersville in upstate New York. Nestled in the Catskills Mountains we discovered Hotel Lilien, an 18-room boutique hotel ladened with vintage charm. We caught up with the Hotel Lilien team to share their story.
What is the history behind Hotel Lilien and what inspired the owners to open the picturesque boutique hotel?
Hotel Lilien is an 1890s estate in Tannersville, New York, that was reopened by The Lost Boys Hospitality Group as a boutique hotel, cocktail bar, and restaurant in late 2022. The building was constructed for the family of a Manhattan physician whose daughter, Meta Lilienthal, wrote of her trips to the Catskills in her memoir, Dear Remembered World.
Could you give us a little bit of info about the owners?
The Lost Boys Hospitality Group is a team of Californians who got their start in Panama, where their properties earned a “cult-like following” among guests, according to The New York Times. The group came to be known as “The Lost Boys,” a reference to the Neverland-like experiences they craft for their guests.
What was the inspiration behind the interior design and decor?
The hotel was reimagined by Field Theory, a design shop based in San Francisco. Their goal was to maintain the charm of the original estate while adding modern touches to elevate the guest experience. The furnishings from various eras were carefully chosen to reflect the collection of someone who has been acquiring special pieces over the course of a lifetime. As a result, every one of the 18 guest rooms is truly one-of-a-kind.
How would you describe the overall ambiance/atmosphere of Hotel Lilien?
Elevated but approachable and always friendly.
What are some fun activities in the Tannersville Area?
While our guests love hiking Kaaterskill Falls, visiting the Mountaintop Arboretum, and picnicking at North-South Lake, many of them embrace our motto to stay awhile. More often than not, we find guests hanging out in our original wood-paneled library with a board game, playing billiards, or sitting by the fire. In the summer, our pool is the best place to relax while our deck draws both hotel guests and locals for seasonal fare and drinks. On Saturday nights, we host a not-to-be-missed DJ at our cocktail lounge.
What kind of events take place at Hotel Lilien?
We’ve hosted Brooklyn restaurant pop-ups, intimate concerts, weddings, wedding after parties, company offsites, wedding weekend buyouts, and more—most recently, a Paulie Gee’s pizza party featuring an intimate performance by Fruit Bats.
What is the most unique thing about Hotel Lilien?
The building itself is as one-of-a-kind as the furnishings that fill it. Between our antique rugs, vintage furniture and art, and handcrafted Blatt Billiards table, every piece is hand-picked and entirely unique.
